Celebrate the spirit of American independence by growing an 1818 Farms Herbal Liberty Tea Garden.
As we approach America's 250th birthday, we are looking back to the traditions of our founders. Did you know that during the Revolution, patriots boycotted imported British tea and turned to their own backyards instead? They brewed delicious, soothing blends from garden herbs, calling them "Liberty Teas."
New for 2026, we have curated a collection of 9 aromatic, high-performing herbs that allow you to grow, harvest and brew your own fresh tea right at home.
If you have only ever brewed dried tea from a bag, you are in for a treat. Fresh herbal tea offers a complexity of flavor and essential oils that dried versions simply cannot match. Tea blends from your garden to cup will provide the ultimate freshness. The plants featured in this tea garden don’t just look beautiful but taste great and smell incredible!
What is Included:
You will receive a collection of the following 9 premium tea plants, specifically chosen for their flavor profiles, ease of growing and historical significance.
- The "Liberty Tea" Legend:
- Scarlet Bee Balm (Monarda): The original "Liberty Tea!" Historically used by colonists after the Boston Tea Party, this native plant brews a tea with a citrus-mint flavor similar to Earl Grey. The stunning red flowers are also a favorite of hummingbirds. Mature Size: 2–3' Tall x 2–3' Wide.
- The Colorful Red and Blue Teas:
- Roselle Hibiscus: Famous for its deep, cranberry-red calyxes that make a tart, Vitamin C-rich tea. Mature Size: 3–6' Tall x 2–3' Wide.
- Butterfly Pea: A stunning vine producing blooms that brew into a vivid indigo-blue tea. Add a squeeze of lemon, and watch it magically turn purple! Mature Size: 6–8' Long (Climbing) x 2–3' Wide. This plant requires a trellis.
- The Calming Classics:
- German Chamomile: The gold standard for relaxation. Produces apple-scented flowers perfect for a sleepy-time tea. Mature Size: 12" Tall x 12” Wide
- Holy Basil (Kapoor Tulsi): This aromatic herb delivers a bold, clove-like spiciness balanced by bright herbaceous undertones and a clean, cooling finish. Mature Size: 12–24" Tall x 12–24" Wide.
- Spearmint: The most versatile herb in the garden. Perfect for hot tea, iced tea, or even a mojito. Mature Size: 12–24 inches tall and can spread indefinitely (unless contained). We recommend that you plant mint in a pot and not in the ground due to mints spreading nature.
- Lemon Balm: Featuring a gentle lemon scent, this herb offers a clean, herbaceous flavor that adds a refreshing flavor to both hot and iced tea blends. Mature Size: 12–24" Tall x 18" Wide.
- Lemon Balm Mandarina: This rare variety offers a bright, tangy mandarin profile that provides a softer, fruitier acidity than traditional lemon-scented herbs. Mature Size: 12–18" Tall x 18" Wide.
- Stevia: Grow your own sugar substitute! A single fresh leaf is often enough to sweeten an entire cup of tea naturally. Mature Size: 12–24" Tall x 12–24" Wide.
Short on space? No problem. Unlike large vegetable crops, herbal tea gardens are incredibly versatile. Your tea garden can be planted as a patio garden, raised bed or directly in the ground.
Unsure how to blend your fresh herbs? We have got you covered. At pickup, you will receive an exclusive 1818 Farms Tea Recipe Guide, featuring our favorite "Liberty Tea" blends.
Growing your own tea is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to connect with nature and history. FAQs
What size will my plants be at pickup? Plant size will vary depending on variety. All plants have been started as early as possible to ensure the most mature plant possible. These are the same size plants we plant in our garden. All plants have been hardened off and should be planted as soon as possible in their permanent growing space.
What are the light requirements for my Herbal Liberty Tea Garden? All plants included in this collection require full sun. For the best growing results, a minimum of 8 hours of sunlight is recommended.
Should I water my plants after pick-up? Once you arrive home with your 1818 Farms Herbal Liberty Tea Garden, water all plants.
When and where should I plant my 1818 Herbal Liberty Tea Garden? All plants are ready to be planted directly in the ground at pickup. It is recommended that you plant within 5 days of pickup. Water immediately after planting. Check the moisture level daily until plants are established. You can plant directly into a prepared flower bed or a raised bed that contains the appropriate soil mixture. We are planting this exact collection in a 4 foot by 8 foot raised bed garden. You can plant it in the ground or pots as well. If planting in pots a few varieties have minimal size requirements.
Roselle Hibiscus – pot diameter no smaller than 14 inches
Stevia - pot diameter no smaller than 14 inches
Spearmint - pot diameter no smaller than 8 inches. We recommend that the mint is only planted in a pot and not directly in the ground
Butterfly Pea - pot diameter no smaller than 12 inches. This will need a trellis to climb. Once these start blooming, pick them each day to encourage more blooms.
When will my plants bloom? Bloom time will vary by plant species. Many tea plants you will be harvesting the leaves only. Roselle Hibiscus will not produce calyx until late summer/early fall.
Will my plants come back the following growing season? Most of the plants in the 1818 Farms Herbal Liberty Tea Garden are tender annuals. This means they will not live after a frost. We have included a few varieties that with appropriate care will return year after year. These varieties are called perennials. Please note that extreme winter weather conditions and lack of watering during the growing season can result in perennials not returning.
What if my plants don’t grow or die? 1818 Farms goal is to provide the best quality starts/plugs for your home garden. Your Herbal Liberty Tea Garden Plant Collection will be inspected on the day of pickup and only first quality plants will be included in your purchase. 1818 Farms is not responsible for plants once they are picked up from our farm. This includes wildlife, pest and environmental damage.
