Chicken 101: Keeping a Backyard Flock

Many people are interested in having a small backyard flock, but are unsure how to get started. This class will cover the basics: why raise chickens, buying chicks, the brooder, heat, water, feed, litter, roosting, space and coops. I will also touch on disease, and predators.

Planning and Designing your Raised Bed Garden

Do you want to learn how to install a quality raised bed garden in your own back yard? There are many planning elements that must be addressed in order to have a garden that thrives and produces fresh produce for you and your family.

After completing this workshop you will walk away with the knowledge to:

 

  • locate where your raised garden should be in your yard
  • determine the size of your raised bed
  • prepare your raised bed site
  • mix a “garden perfect” soil for the raised bed
  • determine what to plant and how much
  • create a diagram showing each crop and it location

Story Time Adventures at 1818 Farms

On the first and third Tuesday of each month, children ages 3-5 can join us for story time at the farm. Each session will feature farm songs and a farm themed story. Your child will take home a farm craft related to that month’s theme. Children will also experience a special guest appearance by one of the 1818 Farms’ animals.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Knitting for Beginners

1818 Farms’ Knitting for Beginners is a two session course, plus an optional class for further instruction. In the classes you will learn how to cast on, knit, and purl. Handouts with diagrams and printed instructions will be provided so that anyone who gets home and forgets how to do it will have a resource.

The instructor, Susie Cobbs, will bring a few very simple patterns for scarves so that people can be thinking about project. The class cost is $55 dollars. This price includes all supplies and both 2 hour sessions.
The optional class is an additional $20. This optional class will be offered for those students who would like to work on their knitting skills, reading patterns and begin a project.
